French Immersion
French Immersion programs are based on the principle that children learn a second language most effectively when using it to study a different subject, for example science or social studies. The French Immersion program at Campbell is a place for the students entering Grade 9 from the elementary French Immersion program to continue their education in French.

What is French Immersion like at High School?

As a general rule, Grade 9 students do not earn credits. The curriculum for this year is a continuation of what took place from Grades 6 through 8. What does change, however, is that each subject is taught by a specialistwith specialized facilities and equipment. This is a time allotted for the students to adjust to their new setting. In French Immersion, the students will continue to take many of their subjects in French.

The number of hours of French instruction varies each year in high school but is approximately 70% in grades 9 and 10 and decreases slightly for grades 11 and 12.

French Immersion programs enable students to acquire the linguistic tools to communicate effectively in the country’s two official languages, French and English.

How is this different than the Grade 9 student in the English program?

The only real difference is that the French Immersion student will be taking two language arts subjects (one in French and one in English). The English class is the same as any other student in the regular English program

What will my Grade 9 French Immersion student take for classes?

All Grade 9 students take 5 courses per semester See tentative schedule below.
